Jan Carson blends realism and fantasy to offer a unique perspective on contemporary Northern Irish society. Her characters, often caught in absurd or even supernatural situations, remain deeply human, making her stories both thought-provoking and entertaining. With a mix of dark humor and compassion, she captures the complexities of everyday life in a way that feels both familiar and unsettling. As the Sunday Independent notes, she is « an avant-garde writer of finely observed and humorous fiction. » In her collection of short stories Quickly, While They Still Have Horses, Carson uses surrealism as a lens to explore the aftermath of the Northern Irish conflict without directly addressing it. This indirect approach allows her to highlight universal themes like family, grief, and resilience while keeping her narratives fresh and unexpected. The blurred line between reality and fantasy in her writing challenges readers to question their own perceptions and consider the ways in which trauma and history shape both individuals and communities. Her style is both poetic and sharp, full of vivid imagery and unexpected turns. By embracing the extraordinary within the ordinary, Carson creates stories that linger in the reader’s mind long after the final page. This novel is yet another example of her ability to push boundaries and solidify her place as one of the most original voices in contemporary literature.
