« Should we admit being idiots ? »

©️ Classe de terminale LLCER, lycée de Saint-Just (Lyon 5e)

« Should we admit being idiots ? » : Such is the kind of question we can ask ourselves while reading Summer Light then Comes the Night. Philosophy is indeed very present in the novel : Stefánsson questions us about universal issues like life and death, ethics… Through the story of an isolated Icelandic community, suspended in time and space. We follow different generations, and travel all around the village : with a poetic writing with immaculate descriptions, heavily influenced by the Icelandic literature, the author manages to wrap us in the characters intimate stories of one night, one week, one month… Stefánsson works on language to write a chaotic, sometimes absurd narrative with a surrealist atmosphere and a lot of humor, for example with some of the chapter’s titles, which are quite surprising and enigmatic. What is also surprising is that, all along the book, we expect action, some things to happen but they never really take place, and when they do, it is never the way we expected them to: with his concrete writing, the author manages to create an anti-climatic story. Why do we live; is it safe to answer such a question? Perhaps not, do we have any tasks besides kissing lips and so on?”: If you are willing to have some answers, read Summer Light then Comes the Light.
