All the stories that the nation tells itself have been proven demonstrably false. We think of ourselves as the world’s great practitioner—and exporter—of democracy, but according to a recent Princeton study, the average citizen possesses a ‘statistically non-significant’ amount of influence on public policy. We like to believe that each subsequent generation will enjoy a higher standard of living than the one that came before it, but wages have stagnated over the past four decades, and on the whole, members of my generation are positioned to earn far less than their parents. We tell ourselves that anyone can ‘make it’ in America, if only they work hard enough, while ignoring the extreme consolidation of privilege and opportunity that has taken place over the past few decades (and the restrictions on entering the country in the first place). It’s up for debate whether or not these stories were once true, or true for a certain group of people. But it is now clear to everyday Americans across the spectrum that the country has failed to deliver on the hopes and expectations that these stories planted in us. And if Americans are particularly susceptible to anything, it’s hope and expectation.

As a writer, I am interested in the stories that people—and nations—tell about themselves, and how they cope when those stories don’t end the way they expected.

I started writing my novel, The Altruists, in 2015, less than a year after graduating college. The job market had recovered somewhat since the financial crisis in 2008, but job opportunities were still limited. I’m not sociologist, but it seemed to me that in the months after graduation, my friends tended to head off in either one of two directions. Some went on to earn huge salaries working in the financial industry as bankers and consultants. Others took a very different route, signing up for civic-minded nonprofit programs like Teach for America and City Year, making very little money in an attempt to give back to society. My finance friends felt guilty about their salaries in a time of historic inequality—Occupy Wall Street had taken place in our sophomore year—but my friends in Teach for America felt guilty, too: they hadn’t received adequate training, the schools were underfunded, and deep down they worried that with their lack of expertise and training, they were actually causing more harm than good. The allure of money and status, and the allure of doing good, and the problems inherent in both, provided the jumping-off point for the novel.

The first two characters I wrote were creatures of this strange new world. Maggie wants to help others, but the punishingly high ethical principles to which she holds herself and others prevent her from joining any kind of broader organization or community. Her older brother, Ethan, has accumulated a great deal of capital from his job as a financial consultant and promptly spends it all on consumer goods that only serve to isolate him from the broader world. Maggie is disenchanted with the compromises that the ‘real world’ demands of her; Ethan is disenchanted by the spiritual void that professional and financial success has failed to fill. On top of this, their mother’s death has fractured their family. Life, for these characters, has not gone according to plan.

Their father, Arthur, a child of the Baby Boom, had been raised to expect professional stability, financial security, and a white picket fence in the suburbs. But his wife’s death, and his waning career, have undercut his plan. So he hatches a scheme to reconcile with his children, hoping they will give their share of his late wife’s inheritance—which Ethan has spent and Maggie won’t touch—back to him.

This was an inversion not only of the inheritance plot common to novels in Victorian England but of the American Dream itself, the money flowing ‘the wrong way,’ up the chain of family lineage instead of town. This unlikely reversal allowed me to explore the much more common national themes that were on my mind at that time, and still are: financial insecurity, generational misunderstanding, and, finally, the disillusionment that sets in when the stories we and our nations tell about themselves fall apart at the end.”

I wrote the above text just weeks before the coronavirus ground many nations—and their economies—to a halt. It brings me no pleasure to report that the virus has proven me right, though I could not have anticipated just how poorly the country would respond to the crisis, for which we have our President to thank. Precarity, which already defines life for so many Americans, has spread along with the virus. Many of us will lose our jobs, if we’re lucky. I was born in 1991, and even discounting the economic recession that continued from 1990 into that year, I have lived through three significant recessions, in 2001, 2008, and 2020. I see myself as a comic novelist—I like to make people laugh—but at the time of this writing, more than six million people have filed for unemployment in the United States while Trump continues to downplay the pandemic. Right now, the joke is on us.

[200,26,14
31
https://www.villagillet.net/entrez-dans-la-villa/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Andrew-RIDKER-c.-George-Baier-IV-4-2-scaled-1.jpg
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v15.2.1 -
