Elle signifie que je suis oblig\u00e9e de consid\u00e9rer des r\u00e9alit\u00e9s qui existent depuis toujours. Les pand\u00e9mies ont toujours exist\u00e9. En toute honn\u00eatet\u00e9, ce qui me frappe le plus dans le COVID-19, c\u2019est sa vitesse faramineuse, la rapidit\u00e9 de sa propagation. Sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 donner une le\u00e7on d\u2019humilit\u00e9 aux humains \u00e0 travers le globe en quelques jours, en quelques semaines, en quelques mois. Vais-je accuser et pointer du doigt, ou vais-je prendre mon stylo&nbsp;? Ai-je l\u2019arrogance de d\u00e9plorer un monde o\u00f9 un virus me dicte les heures et la mani\u00e8re dont je peux sortir&nbsp;? Je suis une auteure. Il n\u2019existe aucune histoire nouvelle qui n\u2019ait pas d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 cont\u00e9e par le pass\u00e9. Nous vivons une histoire qui pourrait facilement commencer ainsi&nbsp;: Il \u00e9tait une fois\u2026 dans les villes dens\u00e9ment peupl\u00e9es et les paisibles campagnes (o\u00f9 les gens ais\u00e9s sont venus \u00e9chapper \u00e0 la \u00ab&nbsp;parano\u00efa&nbsp;\u00bb au profit d\u2019un air frais et non contamin\u00e9. Oh, Henry James, comme j\u2019aimerais que vous soyez parmi nous&nbsp;!). Mais \u00e9coutez donc, il \u00e9tait un temps o\u00f9 les hommes se blottissaient autour d\u2019un feu dans des grottes et des d\u00e9serts, ou sur les rivages inhospitaliers de contr\u00e9es inconnues. Il \u00e9tait une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 les jours ne nous appartenaient pas enti\u00e8rement, et les soir\u00e9es encore moins. Rien n\u2019\u00e9tait acquis, rien n\u2019\u00e9tait certain, et nous choisissions les moments opportuns pour explorer, chasser, cueillir et, oui, pour rester \u00e0 l\u2019abri. Un romantique dirait que nous \u00e9tions en communion avec la nature mais \u00eatre en communion avec la nature ne suffit jamais. \u00catre en communion avec la nature signifie vivre dans l\u2019incertitude. Depuis que les loups sont descendus des collines vers les vall\u00e9es, que les l\u00e9opards nous ont observ\u00e9s dans les ramures des jacarandas, nous vacillons dans ce d\u00e9sir de coexister avec la nature. Nous admirons la nature selon nos propres termes. Et quand nous ne la maltraitons pas, la nature nous blesse une fois par si\u00e8cle environ, elle nous contraint \u00e0 rentrer \u00e0 l\u2019abri, nous contraint \u00e0 faire le bilan de nos distractions, de notre confort mat\u00e9riel, de nos stocks, ainsi que des limites de la biologie humaine. Elle nous rappelle que le ciel que nous tenons pour acquis en allant au travail le matin ou sur le trajet du retour le soir, ou le porc d\u00e9licieux dans lequel nous enfon\u00e7ons nos couteaux, ou l\u2019essence que nous versons dans le r\u00e9servoir de nos voitures, ou les employ\u00e9s des magasins qui empilent de magnifiques oranges, des poires ou des pommes sur les \u00e9tals de fruits (et qui nous sont moins invisibles depuis qu\u2019ils portent des masques comme nous) n\u2019existent pas pour notre simple plaisir. Nombreux sont les employ\u00e9s de magasins qui vivent depuis longtemps dans l\u2019incertitude. \u00c0 mes yeux d\u2019auteure, l\u2019incertitude signifie \u00eatre t\u00e9moin des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s \u2013 le foss\u00e9 entre les riches, les pauvres et les minorit\u00e9s, que le COVID-19 ne nous autorise plus \u00e0 ignorer \u2013 et me dire&nbsp;: je veux juste regarder. Je veux juste regarder un peu. Je ne veux pas m\u2019y attaquer de fa\u00e7on directe. Comment trouver la joie, comment saisir la v\u00e9rit\u00e9, avec ce degr\u00e9 de responsabilit\u00e9&nbsp;?<\/p>\n\n<\/div><div role=\"tabpanel\" class=\"wp-block-ub-tabbed-content-tab-content-wrap ub-hide\"\n        id=\"ub-tabbed-content--panel-1\" aria-labelledby=\"ub-tabbed-content--tab-1\">\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">un\u02c8certainty<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">[un-<sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;12 and 5b.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>1. a.<\/strong>&nbsp;The quality of being uncertain in respect of duration, continuance, occurrence, etc.; liability to chance or accident. Also, the quality of being indeterminate as to magnitude or value; the amount of variation in a numerical result that is consistent with observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the phrase&nbsp;<em>the glorious uncertainty of the law<\/em>&nbsp;see&nbsp;glorious<em>&nbsp;a.<\/em>&nbsp;5b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an artist, what does uncertainty mean to me? It means that I am forced to look at realities that have always existed. Pandemics have always existed. If I am to be honest, what strikes me most about COVIS-19 is its sheer speed and velocity. Its ability to humble human beings around the globe in a matter of days, weeks, and months. Do I point the finger, or do I pick up the pen?&nbsp;Am I arrogant to brood over living in a world where a virus dictates the time and manner in which I go outside?&nbsp; I am a writer.&nbsp; No new stories have ever been told that weren\u2019t old. We are living out a story whose beginning could easily be: Once upon a time\u2026.in densely populated cities and quiet country sides (where the well-to-do have sought refuge from the \u2018paranoia\u2019 in favor of fresh, uncontaminated air. &nbsp;(Oh, Henry James, I wish you were here now!). But listen, there was a time when men huddled around fires in caves and deserts and on the shores of strange new lands. There was a time when the days were not entirely ours and the evenings were even less so. Nothing was a given and so nothing was certain, and we chose our times to roam and to hunt and gather and, yes, to stay indoors. A romantic might say we were one with nature but being one with nature is never enough. Being one with nature means living with uncertainty. Since wolves descended from the hills into the valley and the leopards eyed us while lounging in jacaranda trees, we have wavered in our desire to co-exist with nature. We admire nature on our own terms. And so, when we aren\u2019t bullying nature, every century or so nature puts the hurt on us, forcing us in doors, forcing us to take stock of distractions, creature comforts, stocks as well as the limits of human biology. Reminding us the sky we take for granted in the morning on the way to work or in the evening on the way home or the succulent pork we carve our knives into or the gasoline we put in our cars or the grocery clerks piling the beautiful oranges, pears and apples on fruit stands (less invisible to us now because they are wearing masks like us) do not exist for our mere pleasure. Many of the grocery clerks have lived for long time with uncertainty. As a writer, uncertainty means staring at inequality\u2014the divide between rich and poor and minorities that COVID-19 won\u2019t let us deny anymore. and thinking, I want to peek. I want to peek.&nbsp; I don\u2019t want to engage any of this straight on.
