In Why the French Don’t Like Headscarves (PUP, 2006) and Can Islam Be French? John Bowen, anthropologist, demonstrates his particular interest in the situation of Muslims in France. These field studies benefit from both the distance and insight of an American scholar on the conflict between society and religion in France.
> Can Islam Be French? (Princeton University Press, 2009)

Mark Lilla’s works focus on the contested legacy of the Enlightenment in matters of politics and religion. In The Still-born God, Lilla highlights the inherent contradiction in the triumph of religious fundamentalism in modern Western secular culture.
> The Still-born God (Seuil, 2010)

In La Maladie de l’Islam (Seuil, 2002), the writer and poet Abdelwahab Meddeb lays the groundwork for a discussion, continued in Pari de civilisation, on the possible remedies for the crisis in Islam today, and the violence resulting from the failure of Islam to adapt to the contemporary world.  An advocate for tolerance, he suggests in a lively and erudite style the need for a more open approach, in constant dialogue with the Koran.
> Pari de civilisation (Seuil, 2009)

Dominique Schnapper is a sociologist and specialist in ethno-religious relations, citizenship and democracy. She is the co-author of La Condition juive en France (PUF, 2009), a rigorous analysis of the “new Judaism”.
