Beautiful Strangers (2) : For an anthropology of minorities

Tuesday 17 November 2009 at 19h30 | | Villa Gillet Avec : Yuri Slezkine | Richard White

La Villa Gillet welcomes Les Belles Étrangères

Event hosted by Jean-Marie Durand, deputy editor in charge of the “Media” and “Politics-ideas” columns Inrockuptibles

Yuri Slezkine born in Moscow, is a professor of history and director of the Institute of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies at the University of California (Berkeley).  In his exceptional book, The Jewish Century, he offers us a reflection on the fate of the Jewish people, for whom the 20th century was both a high point and a tragedy. An original and profound reflection on modernity, nationalism, socialism and liberalism.
Le Siècle juif, traduit de l'anglais (États-Unis) par Marc Saint-Upéry (La Découverte, 2009)

Richard White is a professor of History at Stanford (California). Now a classic, The Middle Ground  was initially published in the United States in 1992, the year which marked the half-millennium of the encounter between two worlds, that of the Europeans and that of the Native Americans. Exactly one century after Turner (1892), Richard White radically called into question the “Frontier” schema handed down by the latter and proposed a new paradigm to describe the meeting of two cultures.
Le Middle ground : Indiens, empires et républiques dans la région des Grands Lacs, 1650-1815, traduit de l'anglais (États-Unis) par Frédéric Cotton (Anacharsis, 2009)
