Beautiful Strangers (1) : the anatomy of feelings

Monday 16 November 2009 at 19h30 | | Villa Gillet Avec : Forrest Gander | Céline Curiol

La Villa Gillet welcomes Les Belles Étrangères

Hosted by Francesca Isidori, journalist and producer at France Culture, where she is presenter of the weekly programme “Affinités electives”.

Céline Curiol, a novelist whose work has been described by Paul Auster as “written with grace and economy, vigour and compassion”, introduces us in Exil intermédiaire to two women, both worn down by their marriages, whose paths cross in New York. In three days, Manhattan will shake them up, captivate them, and generate in them an excitement, a desire for love, and the overwhelming need to shut out what is real.

Forrest Gander, novelist, poet and essayist, teaches literature at Brown University (Rhode Island). In his first novel, As a friend, he introduces us to Lester, an elusive seducer caught in a love triangle whose trajectory is brutally interrupted. In this remarkable novel, he calls into question the fine lines between friendship, love and death, managing to invest a small incident with surprisingly tragic intensity.
En ami (As a Friend), translated from the English (USA) by Dominique Goy-Blanquet (Sabine Wespieser, 2009)
