Memory, year zero

Thursday 26 November 2009 at 19h30 | Villa Gillet Avec : Emmanuel Hoog

How can we reconcile the imperative of memory with the right to forget?
What are the challenges of digital preservation ?

In partnership with Ina

In collaboration with éditions du Seuil

A dialogue with Fabrice d’Almeida, historian, professor at the University Paris II Panthéon-Assas, former director of the Institut d’histoire du temps présent, and author of Et si on refaisait l’histoire?  (with Anthony Rowley, Odile Jacob, 2009)

Emmanuel Hoog is president of the National Audiovisual Institute.  In Mémoire année zero he contrasts the crisis of the “national novel” and “collective memory” with technological society’s imperative that “everything must be remembered”. The right to forget is called for as a democratic necessity. A salutary work that promotes a cultural policy within a vision of society where memory can and should coexist with modernity.
