"Seen from elsewhere" // When literature serves as a tribute

Tuesday 29 September 2009 at 19h30 | Villa Gillet Avec : Éric Fottorino | Agnès Desarthe

"Seen from elsewhere" : French literature read by foreign critics

event hosted by :

Agnès Desarthe is a novelist. In her latest book, she pays tribute to B.B.B. (Bouz, Boris, Baruch), the man with whom her grandmother started a new life after the death of her grandfather at Auschwitz in 1942. Filling in this vacuum, he plays an unassuming but essential role. He, the ‘stand-in’, becomes irreplacable. Comparing this image to that of Janusz Korzack, head of an orphanage in a Warsaw ghetto, she paints the moving portrait of her favourite anti-hero.

Éric Fottorino, writer and journalist, runs the daily paper, Le Monde. He has been awarded numerous awards, notably the Fémina Prize for Baisers de cinéma (Gallimard, 2007). In his latest book, L’Homme qui m’aimait tout bas, he provides the reader with an intimate and deeply moving tale of the suicide of his adoptive father. He writes in elegant and sensitive prose.
