The award ceremony took place on December 8, 2011 in Paris, in the presence of Bernd Neumann, Minister of State at the German Chancellery and Representative of the Federal Government for Culture and the Media, and Frédéric Mitterrand, French Minister for Culture and Communication.
This new Franco-German prize has been conceived, and is managed by, the Villa Gillet, in Lyon, and the Genshagen Foundation in the state of Brandenburg (near Berlin), with the support of the German and French Ministries of Culture. It is awarded to two young authors, one German, the other French, whose work has not been translated into the other language. This Franco-German literary prize grants 10,000€ to each author and is aimed at encouraging the translation of the award-winning work into the other language. To be considered for this award, the author must have published a work recently, ideally within the year of the award. The prize-winners are selected by an independent panel of French and German judges.
The Franz Hessel Prize for Contemporary Literature seeks to revive and deepen the intellectual
and literary ties between two countries that are in the heart of Europe.
